Instructional Classes
The Electric City Rock Gym offers a wide variety of instructional classes
on all types of rock climbing from basic beginner classes to advanced rock
climbing. The classes are taught by qualified expert staff of the gym with
over eight years experience each in rock climbing and outdoor safety. If
you want to learn to rock climb, want to take your climbing to the next

CLASSES:
Climbing 101 - basic climbing instruction.
Everything from how to tie knots to learning proper rock climbing
techniques. The class consists of three two hour sessions over a
three week period. The class includes all rental gear, day pass
for each session, and 15% discount on outdoor trips.

Top-Rope Climbing - learn from the professional
and certified staff of the Electric City Rock Gym how to begin your
climbing experience in the outdoor environment. Learn necessary
knot work, rope management, top rope site evaluation, anchor selection,
anchor set-up, and how to top-rope safely. The class consists of
a four hour session at a local crag and will culminate with a safety
test. The class includes all necessary equipment, transportation,
and lunch at the climbing area. Must participate in Climbing 101
class beforehand or have relevant experience equal to that taught
in class.

Anchor Set-Up and Evaluation - this class builds off of the top-rope
class but involves more complex anchor systems and rope management, as well as, how to
competently evaluate an anchor set-up for top-rope climbing or lead climbing. Three hour
class at a local crag. Includes all necessary gear.

Lead Climbing - this class continues where the Anchor Set-Up and
Evaluation left off and begins with climbing on the "sharp end". This class will cover the
necessary knot work, fundamentals of lead climbing, protection, placement of protection,
evaluation of placements, belay anchor construction, and all necessary skills needed to start
lead climbing. The class will consist of two three hour sessions; the first session at the
gym and the second at a local climbing area. The cost includes one day pass, all the necessary
hardware and protection, ropes, and anchor material as well as lunch at
the rock climbing area. The participants must provide harness and shoes. This is an advanced
class and participants must have taken the Top-Rope Climbing and Anchor Set-Up and Evaluation,
or be able to test out with these skills, to be able to take this class.

Intro to Multi-Pitch Climbing - this class is the next
step in your evolution of becoming a complete and competent climber. Participants must have
taken Lead Climbing course or be able to test out. The class covers advanced leading
techniques, advanced protection placement and evaluation, advanced belay anchor set-up and
evaluation, rope management, and how to climb multi-pitch routes. Learn to climb from 3
pitches to 22 pitches! This class focuses heavily on traditional climbing with some basic
aid techniques. The course consists of a four hour session at a climbing area with a multi-pitch
climb to finish the day. The cost includes one day pass at the gym, lunch at the rock climbing
area, all the necessary hardware, ropes, and transportation to the climbing area.

Haul Systems and Basic Aid Climbing - this class is a speciality class
and only for advanced climbers. Anyone wishing to take this course must have completed the
Advanced Leading and Multi-Pitch Climbing course or be able to test out. The course covers haul
systems, rope management, and basic aid climbing techniques. The class is a three hour session
at a local climbing area. The cost includes a one day pass at the gym and lunch at the rock.

Ice Climbing 101 - this class is an introductory class to the basics
of ice climbing. Learn techniques, knot work, ice tool placement, crampon usage, and how to
extend your climbing season into the winter months. The class is a three hour session at a local
ice climbing area and will include all the necessary gear for beginners, lunch at the climbing
area, and transportation to the climbing area. Participants must have their own cold weather
clothing.

Advanced Ice Climbing - this class is designed to build on the Ice
Climbing 101and continue onto the art of setting top-rope anchors for ice climbing, setting
ice protection, evaluating anchors and protection placement, advanced ice techniques, and how
to improve your skills. This class is a three-hour session at a local ice climbing area and
will include the necessary hardware and ropes, lunch at the climbing area, and transportation.
The participant must have their own harness and cold weather clothing.

Advanced Ice Climbing II - this class is designed for ice climbing
enthusiasts or climbers who have taken the Ice Climbing 101 and Advanced Ice Climbing, or can
test out on the skills test. Participants must have their own harness, ice axes, boots, crampons,
and cold weather clothing. The class is designed to teach advanced climbing techniques, advanced
anchor set-up, belay station set-up, and multi-pitch ice climbing techniques.
The class is a four hour session at a local ice climbing area and will include the necessary ropes
and hardware, lunch at the climbing area, and transportation to the climbing area.

Rappelling - this class is designed to teach the basics of rappelling
and anchor set-up. The class is designed to be a three-hour session at a local climbing area
that will teach how to set-up a rappelling anchor station, how to properly use rappel devices,
and how to safely rappel. The class includes a day pass at the gym, a lunch at the climbing
area, all the necessary gear, and transportation to the climbing area.

Bouldering Clinic - Learn technique and style to increase your bouldering
performance. This clinic is designed to learn new bouldering techniques, increase strength, footwork
and overall performance. Taught by New York State bouldering championa and national competitor.
